It is very important to us that every young person is given the opportunity to achieve his or her potential within our subject. We endeavour to create a positive environment for the learning of Mathematics and Numeracy.
Mathematics is one of the core subjects for all pupils in S1 - S4. Our courses follow the 'Curriculum for Excellence' experiences and outcomes in S1, and the National Qualifications arrangements in S2/S3.
In S4, pupils continue with Mathematics at Higher level or take one of the Intermediate levels, where their level of previous attainment determines the starting point. These courses run over two years.
In S6, we also offer the Advanced Higher Course as well as 1 year courses at Higher and Intermediate level.
In addition to these courses, we encourage pupils to participate in a number of school and national competitions. Examples include : Puzzle of the week competition, World Maths Day event, Pi memorising competition (we currently have the UK schools record - see pupil achievements section), Enterprising Maths competition, SMC Maths challenge. We see this as an important form of stimulation and enrichment with potential benefits for all pupils, not just the very able.
'Mathematics is important in our everyday life, allowing us to make sense of the world around us and to manage our lives. Using mathematics enables us to model real-life situations and make connections and informed predictions. It equips us with the skills we need to interpret and analyse information, simplify and solve problems, assess risk and make informed decisions.'
